Gris-Gris Bag
Gris-Gris Bag
Wondrous Item (minor), varies
Description
A gris-gris bag is a small cloth pouch, typically no larger than a coin purse, tied shut with cord or twine and worn on the body or kept close to the bearer. Each bag is carefully assembled using a combination of herbs, roots, stones, bone fragments, powders, and other symbolic materials aligned to a specific intention.
The color of the bag’s fabric reflects its purpose - red for love or passion, green for prosperity, white for protection or healing, black for banishing or warding, and so forth. The contents are never meant to be examined once sealed.
The creation of a gris-gris bag is as important as its contents. The maker mixes its ingredients by hand, focusing on the desired outcome, often speaking prayers, invocations, or quiet affirmations throughout the process. The finished bag is tied closed and anointed with specially prepared oils or perfumes aligned with its purpose.
A gris-gris bag must be carried or worn by its intended recipient to function. Tradition holds that the bag must never be opened, submerged in water, or handled by another creature. If any of these occur, the bag’s magic immediately fades.
To maintain its potency, the bearer must periodically spend time focusing on the bag’s purpose (typically 10 minutes of quiet meditation each day) and reapply a small amount of scented oil once per week.
Activation
A gris-gris bag functions continuously while carried on the person.
Effect
Each gris-gris bag grants a +1 luck bonus to a narrow category of checks, saves, or statistics aligned with its purpose. This bonus only applies when the action clearly relates to the bag’s intention.
Common examples include:
- Protection & Warding: +1 luck bonus to AC or on saving throws against curses, fear, or negative energy effects (chosen at creation).
- Money & Prosperity: +1 luck bonus on Appraise checks and on one Profession or Craft skill.
- Love & Attraction: +1 luck bonus on Diplomacy and Bluff checks made to influence attitudes.
- Gambling & Luck: +1 luck bonus on Profession (gambler) checks, Sleight of Hand, or any one skill used in games of chance.
- Job & Success: +1 luck bonus on one specific skill tied to a chosen profession or role.
- Health & Healing: +1 luck bonus on Fortitude saves or Heal checks.
- Unhexing & Banishing: +1 luck bonus on saving throws against curses, hexes, and possession effects.
- Specific Needs: +1 luck bonus on a narrowly defined category of checks (subject to DM approval).
The bonus applies only when the gris-gris bag’s purpose is relevant, at the DM’s discretion.
Limitations
- A character may benefit from only one gris-gris bag at a time. Carrying multiple causes their magic to become inert.
- If the bag is opened, soaked, or handled by another creature, it immediately becomes nonmagical.
- If the bearer fails to maintain the bag (no meditation or oiling for 7 consecutive days), its bonus is suppressed until proper care resumes.

Lore
Gris-gris bags are among the most widespread forms of folk magic in river towns, port cities, and backwater settlements. Unlike rings or wands forged by learned enchanters, these charms are made by hands that know soil, bone, and spirit more intimately than spellbooks.
To outsiders, they are trinkets - scraps of cloth filled with kitchen herbs and superstition. Yet those who carry them often swear by their quiet influence. A gambler who “just happens” to win when it matters. A traveler who avoids the one road where bandits waited. A healer whose hands never seem to falter.
Among practitioners, it is understood that the power of a gris-gris does not come solely from its contents, but from intention, belief, and continuity. The bag is not a spell - it is a relationship. Neglect it, and it withers. Violate its sanctity, and it dies.
Some whisper that the most potent gris-gris bags are not merely symbolic, but inhabited - that something listens from within, subtle and patient, nudging fate in small, almost imperceptible ways.
