Ring of the Leaping Toad

Ring of the Leaping Toad

Aura
faint transmutation; CL 5th
Slot ring; Price 5,400 gp; Weight

This peculiar ring is crafted of braided gold, its setting formed into a small pedestal upon which rests a finely carved toad of deep green stone. When worn, the toad’s surface feels faintly cool and damp, as though kissed by morning dew. In dim light, its eyes seem to glisten with a subtle, knowing awareness.

The wearer of the Ring of the Leaping Toad gains an unnatural affinity for bounding movement. Their legs coil with latent energy, and their body seems to remember motions not wholly their own. When preparing to leap, the wearer often feels a faint, instinctive tightening in their muscles - followed by a sudden, explosive release.

Abilities:
The wearer gains a +10 competence bonus on Jump checks.

In addition, three times per day, the wearer may invoke the ring’s power as a swift action before making a jump. For that single jump, they are treated as if under the effects of the jump spell (granting a +30 enhancement bonus on Jump checks), and the maximum distance they can leap is not limited by their height. When using this ability, the wearer’s movement takes on an almost unnatural arc, mimicking the powerful, spring-loaded leap of a toad.

If the wearer begins their jump from a stationary position, they are still treated as if they had a running start when using this ability.

Construction
Requirements Forge Ring, jump; Cost 2,700 gp, 216 XP

Lore:
Scholars of obscure magical traditions often trace the origins of the Ring of the Leaping Toad to hedge-wizards and swamp mystics who sought to emulate the effortless mobility of marsh creatures. These early enchanters, often overlooked by their more prestigious peers, developed a quiet mastery over transmutation rooted in observation rather than theory.

It is said that the first of these rings was crafted not in a tower or academy, but knee-deep in blackwater, beneath a chorus of croaking voices. The creator - whose name is lost to time - allegedly spent weeks watching a single toad traverse impossible distances, vanishing from one patch of reeds only to appear impossibly far away. Whether through magic or madness, the wizard claimed to have “learned the secret of the coil.”

Over time, such rings found their way into the hands of thieves, scouts, and adventurers who prized mobility over brute strength. Many tales speak of their use in daring escapes - leaping from rooftops, vaulting city walls, or bounding clear over waiting enemies. Yet just as many stories end in misjudged landings, tangled limbs, or an unfortunate realization that while one may leap like a toad, one does not always land like one.

Among certain circles, the ring carries a quiet reputation: not as a tool of power, but as a reminder that even the smallest creatures may possess gifts that defy expectation.
