DESCRIPTION

This preserved head of a large marsh alligator has been expertly taxidermized, its glassy eyes replaced with polished orbs of murky green agate. Its jaws are fixed slightly ajar, revealing rows of yellowed teeth, while its leathery hide remains remarkably supple to the touch. When held or mounted within a natural environment, the head exudes a faint scent of brackish water and decaying reeds.

While carried or kept within 30 feet, the Alligator Head of the Stillwater Watcher grants the bearer a +2 competence bonus on Survival checks and Knowledge (nature) checks. In addition, the bearer gains a +2 bonus on Spot checks made to notice creatures within swampy, marsh, or riverbank terrain.

Once per day, as a standard action, the bearer may speak a command word to invoke the head’s latent awareness. For the next 5 minutes, the bearer gains the benefits of the spell detect animals or plants, though the sense manifests as a subtle tightening sensation in the jaw of the alligator head - the closer the relevant creatures, the more pronounced the pressure.

Furthermore, once per week, the bearer may press their hand into the alligator’s mouth and ask a single question concerning the immediate natural surroundings (within 1 mile). This functions as commune with nature, though the information is conveyed in vague impressions - ripples in water, shifting reeds, distant splashes - rather than direct language.

If placed in still water overnight, the head slowly regenerates its minor magical potency, allowing its daily ability to be used again even if it has already been expended that day.
