Blade of the Last Confession

Blade of the Last Confession

Aura
strong necromancy; CL 12th
Slot —; Price 38,315 gp; Weight 4 lbs.

DESCRIPTION

This +2 keen longsword is unnaturally cold to the touch, its blade etched with faint script that rearranges itself constantly. When the wielder confirms a critical hit, the target must succeed on a DC 17 Will save or be affected as though by zone of truth for 1 minute (centered on the victim only).

Once per day, if the wielder reduces a creature to 0 or fewer hit points, they may force the dying creature to speak a single truthful statement (as speak with dead but requiring no corpse preservation and lasting only one question). This effect functions even if the creature does not share a language with the wielder.

Each time this ability is used, the wielder must make a DC 15 Will save or take 1 point of Wisdom damage as fragments of the victim’s final thoughts linger in their mind.

LORE

The Blade of the Last Confession was crafted for an inquisitor who believed that truth revealed in death was the purest form of justice. He wielded it not to kill, but to extract truth in the final moment - believing that no lie could survive the threshold between life and death.

Over time, the sword began to whisper truths unasked. Not just those of enemies, but of allies… and eventually, of the wielder himself. It is said the inquisitor ultimately turned the blade upon himself, desperate to silence what it had begun to reveal.

In Ravenloft, the blade is often associated with ruined courts, abandoned interrogation chambers, and domains where truth itself has become a weapon more terrifying than any lie.
