Armor of the Mourning Host
Armor of the Mourning Host
Aura moderate necromancy; CL 10th
Slot armor; Price 42,000 gp; Weight 45 lbs.
DESCRIPTION
This suit of +2 full plate appears as blackened steel etched with faint, sorrowful faces that shift when not directly observed. The Armor of the Mourning Host grants its wearer damage reduction 5/magic and resistance 10 to cold. Once per day, as an immediate action when struck in combat, the wearer may activate the armor to gain the effects of stoneskin (CL 10th).However, each time the armor’s protective ability activates, the wearer must succeed on a DC 15 Will save or be affected as though by doom for 1 minute, overwhelmed by the grief of countless dead souls bound within the armor. Additionally, the wearer takes a –2 penalty on saves against fear effects while wearing the armor, as the whispers of the fallen erode their resolve.
LORE
The Armor of the Mourning Host is said to have been forged on a battlefield where no victor stood, only corpses. A nameless artificer, driven mad by loss, gathered fragments of armor from the dead and fused them together with funerary rites instead of proper smithing. Each piece still remembers the final breath of its former owner. Those who wear the armor report hearing murmured apologies, unfinished prayers, and the names of loved ones spoken in voices that are not their own. The longer one wears it, the harder it becomes to distinguish their own thoughts from those of the dead.
In Ravenloft, the armor is sometimes found in abandoned keeps or crypts where entire garrisons fell overnight. It is never discovered clean - always resting among bones, as though waiting for another body to carry its burden.
