DESCRIPTION

This smooth, palm-sized stone is pleasantly rounded and faintly polished, as though it has been handled many times. When held in the hand, it becomes slightly warm after 1 minute of continuous contact, reaching approximately the temperature of a mildly sun-warmed rock.

If removed from contact, the stone cools back to ambient temperature over the course of 1 minute. The warmth produced is insufficient to deal damage, provide meaningful comfort in cold environments, heat food, or produce any functional benefit whatsoever.

The stone’s effect is constant and requires no command word, charges, or activation.

LORE

No credible arcane institution claims authorship of the Stone of Slight Warmth, and most scholars insist that its existence must be either a joke, a mistake, or the result of an apprentice being left unsupervised for too long. The enchantment itself is trivial - so trivial, in fact, that it has been used in lectures as an example of “technically successful but philosophically misguided magic.”

Some accounts suggest that the stone was originally created as part of a grander experiment in thermal transference, though what remains is merely the most inconsequential fragment of that research. Others claim it was deliberately designed as a meditation tool, forcing the bearer to focus on patience and the passage of time, though this interpretation is widely mocked.

A handful of collectors of oddities prize such items, not for their utility, but for their sheer refusal to be useful. In certain circles, owning a Stone of Slight Warmth is considered a statement - either of wealth, eccentricity, or a deeply ironic sense of humor.

There is, I must confess, something deeply unsettling about an object such as this. One expects incompetence when confronted with uselessness - sloppy sigils, unstable bindings, or the telltale fraying of a spell poorly understood. Yet this stone bears none of those flaws. Its enchantment is clean. Intentional. Measured. It is the work of a practiced arcanist, one who knew precisely what they were doing… and did it anyway.

The magical structure reveals careful layering - minute calibrations ensuring the warmth never exceeds its utterly trivial threshold, never fluctuates, never surprises. This is not accidental magic. This is restraint, refined to the point of absurdity. One cannot help but feel that something has been deliberately withheld, as though the creator stopped just short of meaning.

Naturally, such an object has found its way into the hands of merchants who speak of it in hushed tones, attaching to it an air of rarity and curiosity in the hopes that intrigue might substitute for value. They price it at a figure that suggests hidden worth, forgotten purpose, or esoteric function. I assure you - it possesses none of these things.

It is, in every measurable sense, exactly what it appears to be: a stone that becomes slightly warm. Nothing more. And certainly not worth the gold for which it is so often, and so confidently, sold.
