Item Familiar: Scythe of Reaping
This plain looking but deadly scythe is thought to be created by the Grim Reaper itself for those it sees as having a great destiny of death ahead of them. It will just appear one night to it’s owner, but the owner will treat it as if they had always had the weapon (yet being unable to recall where they obtained it).
Without the Item Familiar feat, the Scythe of Reaping will always act as a +1 Scythe with no special properties. For those with the feat, however, its real powers become known as the owner increases in level.
Level 1: +1 Scythe
Level 4: +1 Keen Scythe
Level 7: +2 Keen Scythe
Level 10: +2 Keen Mighty Cleaving Scythe
Level 13: Becomes intelligent (Int 10, Wis 10, Cha 12, Ego 5, Speaks Common, Cause Moderate Wounds 3/day, Alignment matches owner)
Level 16: +3 Intelligent Keen Mighty Cleaving Scythe
Level 19: +4 Intelligent Keen Mighty Cleaving Scythe
Level 4: +1 Keen Scythe
Level 7: +2 Keen Scythe
Level 10: +2 Keen Mighty Cleaving Scythe
Level 13: Becomes intelligent (Int 10, Wis 10, Cha 12, Ego 5, Speaks Common, Cause Moderate Wounds 3/day, Alignment matches owner)
Level 16: +3 Intelligent Keen Mighty Cleaving Scythe
Level 19: +4 Intelligent Keen Mighty Cleaving Scythe
The weapon, however, “consumes” 10% of all of the Experience Points that the character gains. If the owner chooses to not feed their Scythe, it becomes dormant as if they no longer possessed the Item Familiar feat. Once it is fed what it is owed, however, it powers back up and functions normally.
At 13th level, when the Scythe of Reaping awakens, it takes on some of the owner’s personality traits. If the owner is ever slain, the Scythe will retain those traits. It will fade from existence a year and a day after the death of it’s owner, only to appear to the next and “reset” to it’s unintelligent state. A small rune will appear on the blade, and when touched it will give the owner some small insight to the previous owner (this has no game effect and is for color only).
